Cardiology Conditions
Conveniently located to serve Baytown, Mont Belvieu, and Dayton
At Houston Cardiovascular Institute, we help diagnose cardiology conditions in Baytown and provide safe and appropriate treatment. Heart disorders can be serious and, in many cases, fatal. Therefore, these cardiology conditions must be detected promptly for immediate treatment.
Dr. Shehzad Sami, a skilled and respected multi-board-certified cardiologist with years of experience, treats a wide variety of issues.
Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is an irregular rhythm in the heart. When it occurs, the heart’s Sinoatrial node produces chaotic and fast electrical impulses.
Atrial fibrillation reduces the ability of the heart to distribute nutrient-rich blood into the body. It also increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart failure. Dr. Sami creates a treatment plan for atrial fibrillation patients, which may include lifestyle changes, medications, and procedures.
Cardiac Arrhythmias
Any deviation of the heart’s electrical impulses or rhythm can cause cardiac arrhythmia. Types of arrhythmias include premature beats, bradycardia, supraventricular tachycardias, and ventricular rhythm problems.
Dr. Sami treats arrhythmias using lifestyle changes, prescription medications, invasive therapies, electrical devices, or surgery depending on the severity of the condition.
Cholesterol
Patients with too much cholesterol in their bodies can develop atherosclerosis. Healthy lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and weight loss can help treat the condition. If these changes do not produce significant improvement, Dr. Sami will prescribe cholesterol-lowering medications.
Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease (CAD) can develop once the arteries become narrowed due to fat or plaque buildup. Our treatments for CAD include lifestyle changes, medications like blood thinners, and procedures like percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).
Heart Attack
For patients suffering from a heart attack, coronary angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention will be performed immediately for the safety of the patient and to prevent further damage to the heart muscle.
Heart Failure
Once heart failure occurs—when the heart muscle is too weak or too stiff—the heart cannot provide sufficient oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the body. Dr. Sami will recommend lifestyle changes and medical prescriptions to manage heart failure. For severe cases, device therapies or surgical procedures will be recommended.
High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure occurs when the force exerted by the blood on the blood vessel walls is stronger than normal. Dr. Sami recommends healthy lifestyle changes to reduce blood pressure. In some cases, we prescribe blood-pressure-lowering medications.
Peripheral Artery Disease
For patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), we prescribe medications as early treatment. If this does not treat PAD, Dr. Sami recommends interventional options such as percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, endarterectomy, or bypass graft surgery.
Stroke
A stroke occurs when an artery in the brain is clogged, bleeds, or bursts. This can cause brain damage. Immediate treatment is needed and may include intravenous injection of tissue plasminogen activator (TPA).
Valvular Heart Disease
Valvular heart disease affects the valves in the chambers of the heart. It can be categorized as either stenosis (when the forward flow of blood is restricted) or regurgitation (when backflow occurs). For severe cases, Dr. Sami will perform valve repair surgery or valve replacement surgery.
Your Consultation
Dr. Sami will perform a comprehensive physical examination during your consultation. To determine the nature of your cardiology condition, he will ask you questions about symptoms and various lifestyle factors, and he will also evaluate your medical history. Dr. Sami will recommend a treatment plan based on the severity and type of cardiology condition.
